On to the lighter side of things, I found out that the hamsters learned humping on each other while I was away!! Gah. Imagine my surprise when, the moment we got back from a 4-day Batangas getaway, I caught Chuchu humping on Chichi! (I took pictures of the “act”, by the way, but I haven’t uploaded them yet).
Is that normal? I was told that they were only 2 weeks old when I got them from the pet shop, so that makes them less than 2 months old right now. When do hamsters learn humping on each other anyway? Are they just playing, or is there really a chance for Chichi to get pregnant at this early stage of her life? I noticed too that they’re not fighting that much anymore, unlike before. But they’re still babies! Aren’t they too young for um, hamster sex? :(

Get ready, Lola. Once hamsters reach sexual maturity, well, suffice it to say you’re going to need a bigger cage. (And beware, they can get cannibalistic.)
the good news is - it is normal at their age… which means yes, it’s possible for her to get preggy this early. :P

OMG, that’s so hilarious. OK, I don’t know the answer to that, but I gather they’re like those other furry critters — rabbits… humping until they breed millions. LOL. Maybe it is normal — like instinctual behaviour.

When the time comes (and that is if Chuchu and Chihi survives), you need to separate Chichi and isolate her several days before she gives birth. Otherwise Chuchu will inevitably get jealous and kill all his children. Likewise, Chichi may also attempt to kill ‘em if threatened.
yup i agree with marcvill. be careful of her also … if she does get preggy and give birth, she might have a tendency to be very protective of the babies and bite.

sweetie. Hamsters can become pregnant as early as 1 & a half months old. I wish they told you to separate them by one month old. Yes, there is a good chance the girl will get pregnant. When/Where did they “learn” it? Its natural. Its instinctive with males once they reach maturity, which for hamsters can be a mere 2 months old . Where did human males learn how to do that before sex education class or perverted stuff like porn? Its instinctive, not to be gross but thats how species have survived for so long.
