I finally gave in. As of the start of last week, I am (once again) a proud mommy to two cute little teddy bear hamsters named Chichi and Chuchu. (Okaay, I know these names are lame, but can I help it if those were the first syllables that came out of my mouth when I first saw them? Hehe.)
I contemplated on it for a while–for a looong while, actually. It started back when I was still working with these girls, back when they couldn’t stop talking about their hamsters and I could only look at their pictures enviously! So for a time, I was weighing the pros and the cons (you know how obssessive-compulsive I can be sometimes), thinking if it’s an investment worth making, or if I have time to feed them and play with them and take care of them, or if I’m ready to be emotionally attached again (LOL. Seriously, I cried for nights when my first hamster died!). But just like many other impulsive decisions I’ve made in the past, my contemplation turned out to be a waste of time, because the moment I laid eyes on the hammies, logic was the last thing I could think of and all I wanted was to take them home with me.
Consequently, I bought the hammies at a time when my eyes were all strained from the glare of the computer, and my head’s all stressed out from all the overanalyses I’ve been doing the past few days. (In short, when thinking rationally was the last thing I could do). The only concern I could think of at that time was if I should buy just one hamster instead of two. After asking some experts (LOL), I learned that hamsters, too, might become depressed, and I didn’t want that for my babies so I had to buy him/her someone to share his/her world with (in the form of a plastic hamster cage worth almost 2000php! Grr).

Meet my hammies, Chichi and Chuchu.
(Chi’s the brown-ish one, and Chu’s the grey-ish other).
Here I go again. While more responsibilities is supposedly not an option for me right now, I found a stress-reliever in the form of another responsibility. Don’t you just love ironies? c”,)
View their Hamsterster account here and here. (Lemme just say, I was just curious at first if somebody already thought of making a social networking site for hamsters, after all, dogs have dogster, and friends have, well, friendster. So I keyed in “hamsterster” and lo and behold, there is. Crazyweird.) More pictures here.

Your hammies are cute! So are their names - not so weird, really.
I once had a nice 5 gallon tank containing 4 goldfish, sitting on my cubicle, at my old workplace 5 years ago. I named them all after 4 client projects (I know, I’m weird).
Then I got downsized and I had to come back to pick up the tank and the fish. In my absence, a couple of my friends (co-workers who didn’t get downsized) fed the fish, but umm… they didn’t co-ordinate the feeding times. Apparently, the fish were getting multiple-fed… everyone in the office kept visiting that tank and dropping in food pellets. YIKES!
When I came back 4 days later, all the fish were dead. Bloated, floating on the surface. OMG! So, not only did I lose my job, I also lost my beloved fish (which I had for 2 years and acted as “stress-relievers” - when I got stressed at work, I liked to look at the fish swim).
OK, it’s funny now, but not back the. :( The moral of the story is… don’t name your fish after client projects, haha, or they’ll die, haha.
HAMSTERTER. reality IS stranger than fiction. haha
contemplate contemplate pa, bibigay din naman :p you think too much at 23, riz!
ANG CUTE NG HAMSTERS, BTW. best decision you ever made hahahaha kidding pero ang stress reliever nga nyan! sarap ibato sa pader! what’s wrong with you marian!?! hahaha joke lang ang cutecutecute! girl or boy? oh no, you know how fast they multiply! haha
Cute nga ng Chichi at Chuchu eh, hehe! Natawa ako that time I read your txt about them. :) Hmmm, do you think we should add other hamsterters to their friends’ list? :D
hamsterster–takte! nakakatawa/tuwa. :P
hmm
are they durable? (i think this is the wrong word…) i mean, are they difficult to kill?
because i never had a pet before, and i am split between furry animals or something that swims.
maybe i’ll get a duckbilled platypus…
@Mr. Kupy, o? what about them? LOL.
@Fruityoaty, hahaha that was brilliant! I’m glad I named them Chichi and Chuchu. I feel so much better about it now. :Pi
@Marian, look who’s talking! You also used to think too much at what, 21?? So okaaay, you’ve probably outgrown it already now but still, admit it, you’re still a closet think-er yourself!! That is, after all your gigs are over and you’re back in your ragged clothes. A melancholic will always be. Hate to break it to you girl, it’s a curse. LOL. :P
@Joni, Hehe. Tara, let’s start adding friends. (LOL, pare-pareho naman sila ng itsura!!).
@Tarits, girl you’re talking in a foreign language. Duckbilled Platypus??! Some nerdy friends I have. Hehe.
Ngeee sana humingi ka nalang sakin. Meron kami anim sa bahay :P Trip ng asawa ko mag-breed ng hamsters lately, ewan ko kung baket. Eto nga o, may sarili pa silang blog: http://mypethamsters.com/

I used to breed hamsters. Got a colony of around a hundred at one time.
Be careful not to accidentally “mate” them if you’re not ready for MORE “babies” (take it from Gail)
If you have a boy and a girl, make sure to separate them when they’re “mature” enough to breed, which I believe is soon, if not now.
Syrian hamsters won’t be as cute as they grow old, especially the males. The babies are the cutest!
Good luck! :p
Chichi and Chuchu are so cute! I remember the time I was bit by a hamster a few years back. We were having lunch at Pinausakan restaurant in Roxas Blvd. They had pet hamsters in a cage and I went over to look at them and I was stupid enough to put my index finger inside the cage. The hamster thought it was snack time and bit my finger. Hehe :D
